American Public Education 2021

Since the turn of the 20th Century, the Progressive Movement has been gradually taking control of public education in the United States.  Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said, “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.” *

Whether they were aware of Mr. Lincoln’s view or not, the idea has not been lost on the Progressives.  To them, the schools are a “change agent” that they can use to convert a racially prejudiced, greedy, and ethically derelict America into a just, humane, and politically correct society (as they define it).

Teacher’s unions like the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers have been radicalized.  The focus of their efforts now appears to be on becoming the point of the spear leading America into a socialist utopia, rather than representing the best interests of teachers in the workplace.

Since the Democratic Party recently gained control of the executive and legislative branches of the federal government, the situation has become infinitely worse.  Americans with traditional values have been called racists and are portrayed as an impediment to social progress.  Religious beliefs that are foundational to the American way of life have been described as bigotry and hate speech, and the present administration is empowering public education to implement that agenda.

For a thorough discussion of the failure of American public educational system to teach our children such basic competencies as Science, Mathematics, Reading, and Writing please refer to my July 17, 2020 post entitled, Education 2020.

As a reminder, let me say that, when compared to students in other countries (in 2012), American students' PISA test scores ranked 28th in Mathematics and 21st in Science. www.nsf.gov/nsb/spi/edTool/data/highschool-08.html  Further, one source showed that (in 2015) our kids' PISA scores ranked 39th in Mathematics, 24th in Science, and 24th in Reading. www.pewsearch.org/fact-tank/2017/02/15/u-s-students-internationally-math-science/

Regrettably, more recent data was not immediately available. Now, the dismal failure of our public schools shown by these scores happened in spite of the fact that Americans paid over $12,000.00 in taxes per enrolled student every year.

I’m just a dumb guy, but it seems to me that our educational system is a failure.  I would like it if our failed educators would focus on improving their professional performance, rather than trying to remake society by destroying the values parents want to teach their children.  Failures should not presume to teach values to our children that most of us do not support, and in fact object to.

On her television show, Sovereign Nation, Michelle Malkin recently said something to the effect that we should emphasize our country’s accomplishments, rather than focus on its shortcomings.  Take heed to this warning from Abraham Lincoln, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Just one more thing:

The above is not intended to disparage the thousands of rank and file teachers who do the best job they can every day, working in a broken system.  It is not about the teachers who are good Americans at heart.

Edwards Deming is reported to have said that when there are problems, 85 percent of the fault lies with the system and 15 percent with people.  The educational system needs to be restructured from the ground up.  The people who are responsible for 15 percent of the problem are the leftist administrators, AOC wannabe teachers, union leaders, and politicians who are trying to ruin the country.

Today - Tomorrow - Someday

Compelled by the Holy Spirit (Acts 20:22), the Apostle Paul traveled to Jerusalem.  The Spirit warned him that he would be persecuted there, and his friends begged him not to go.  After he arrived, he was brought before the Jewish ruling counsel, and also caught up in a riot.  Roman soldiers took him into custody to keep the peace and to prevent him from being killed.  He was escorted to Caesarea to stand trial.  Paul made his defense on several occasions, before Governors Felix, Porcius Festus, and King Agrippa.

The reaction was varied.  Frightened by the things Paul said, Governor Felix delayed the matter until he was succeeded by Festus. Governor Festus wanted to please the Jewish Leaders by returning Paul to Jerusalem to be tried by them.  Knowing they were plotting to ambush and kill him along the way, Paul exercised his right as a Roman citizen to appeal his case to Caesar.  As a matter of curiosity, Felix asked the visiting King Agrippa to hear Paul’s case.  After he heard Paul’s story:

Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” (Acts 26:28 NKJV)

 https://biblehub.com/nkjv/acts/26.htm

Agrippa’s statement has been the subject of a great many sermons, often pointing to the tragedy that Agrippa came so close to heaven but missed it.  Felix missed the mark because he was too afraid to deal with the power of Paul’s message.  Festus just wanted to get rid of a political hot potato.  They all put off until tomorrow what may have been their only chance to believe unto everlasting life.

John Fogerty, the lead singer for the rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival, wrote a song the group recorded called, “Someday Never Comes.”  The chorus goes:

Well, I'm here to tell you now each and every mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young
'Cause Someday Never Comes

https://genius.com/Creedence-clearwater-revival-someday-never-comes-lyrics

A friend of mine used to say that “Tomorrow isn’t promised to anybody.”  To make it personal, I would add that tomorrow is not promised to you or to me.  Someday never comes because when we get to tomorrow, it becomes today … and someday keeps getting pushed back.  If you wait until tomorrow - or someday - you may end up like King Agrippa.  He came close, but close doesn’t get it done.

Please decide to ask Jesus to be your Savior.  Please do it now.  Then you can sing this old gospel song along with your brothers and sisters in Christ:

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
no turning back, no turning back.

Though none go with me, I still will follow;
though none go with me, I still will follow;
though none go with me, I still will follow;
no turning back, no turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me;
the world behind me, the cross before me,
the world behind me, the cross before me;
no turning back, no turning back. *

Easter Sunday, 2021

When I was a child, Mom used to hard boil eggs and then color the shells at Easter time.  Before we got up, she would hide the eggs around the house and yard, and she would include a carton of chocolate milk for each of us.  I loved chocolate milk, but the folks couldn’t afford to buy it very often.  For me, it was almost as exciting as Christmas morning.

At Easter, believers celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord Jesus.  The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was buried.  Then, on the third day he was raised from the dead and was seen by many people. (1Corinthians 15:3-7) Later, He ascended into Heaven. (Acts1:9) One day He will return, give us new resurrection bodies, and take His people bodily to be with Him in His Father’s house. (John 14:1-3, 1Corinthians 15:35-43)

The blessings of God are without limit.  There are always more blessings for those who trust and obey Him.  Jesus said:

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever; the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. After a little while, the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you. The one who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will reveal Myself to him.” (John 14:18-21 NASB)

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, King David of Israel, Stephen the Martyr, and the Apostles Peter and Paul taught us that now Jesus sits at the right hand of the God the Father in heaven, and all things are subordinate to Him. (Ephesians 1:21-23) Soon we will see His Glory, for “… at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11 NASB)

You will find this testimony in many places in the Bible including (but not limited to): Psalm 110:1, Acts 7:55-56, Romans 8:34, Ephesians 1:18-23, Hebrews1:3, and 1Peter 3:22.  But wait, there is more!  Paul shows us that believers have been raised with Christ, and our lives are in God through Christ.  Indeed, in Christ, we are seated at the right hand of God the Father in Heaven:

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.  Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.  For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.  And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. (Colossians 3:1-4 NLT)

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.  So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.  Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.  For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:4-10 NLT) *

 Praise God. Thank you, Lord Jesus.  Happy Easter.

He Knew

Our Lord Jesus Christ knew He would be killed if He traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate His final Passover with His disciples:

Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”  (Mark 10:32-34 NKJV) (See also Matthew 20:17-19, Luke 18:31-33) *

He went voluntarily because it was the Father’s will, (Luke 22:42), for Jesus to provide a way of salvation for you and me. (John 3:16) There has never been, and never will be a greater Love than this.

Palm Sunday, 2021

According to the Holy Bible, Zechariah son of Berekiah and grandson of Iddo was the human author of the Book of Zechariah.  Scripture says it was written in the second year of the reign of King Darius, which scholars have placed at 520 B.C.  Jesus Christ was crucified when he was about 33 years old.  Thus, Zechariah’s prophesy about the Messiah’s entry into Jerusalem was written 553 years before it happened:

Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
He is righteous and endowed with salvation,
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
(Zechariah 9:9 NASB) *

The account of the triumphal entry of Christ Jesus into Jerusalem is well known, but you may read it 21st chapter of Matthew, the 19th chapter of Luke, and the 12th chapter of John.

Please take a few moments to give thanks to God for what our Lord has done for us.  He paid for our salvation with His life.

Bless the Lord

Psalm 103

A Psalm of David

Praise for the Lord’s Mercies

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.

As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
And its place remembers it no more.
But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
To such as keep His covenant,
And to those who remember His commandments to do them.

The Lord has established His throne in heaven,
And His kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, you His angels,
Who excel in strength, who do His word,
Heeding the voice of His word.
Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.
Bless the Lord, all His works,
In all places of His dominion.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! (New King James version) *

God First

Jesus warned us about being greedy:

But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began thinking to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. And I will say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’ Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.”
(Luke 12:15-21 NASB)

The Apostle Paul explained that greed is a form of idolatry:

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, (Colossians 3:5-6 NASB)

Idolatry is idol worship. What the Word of God is telling us is that we must not make an idol out of wealth or worldly possessions.

James describes the consequences of the idolatry committed by the covetous and greedy. He provides the remedy as well. When we draw near to God, everything else pales by comparison. We must not let anything become more important to us than God. He alone is worthy to be worshiped and praised.

What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is the source not your pleasures that wage war in your body’s parts? You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend what you request on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (Emphasis added) Or do you think that the Scripture says to no purpose, “He jealously desires the Spirit whom He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God and He will come close to you. (James 4:1-7 NASB)
