Enough!

The legalese is complicated, but in international waters a vessel of the United States Navy may be regarded as sovereign US territory. [1]  In the case of a merchant vessel that is registered in the United States and flying the American flag, the US citizens aboard are considered to be under the jurisdiction of the United States. [2]

The warships of the United States Navy enjoy sovereign immunity.  They may not be boarded, searched, or otherwise interfered with by the armed forces, police, or other agents of any foreign nation or group. [3] If a US Navy ship is attacked in international waters it may be regarded as an attack on the sovereign territory of the United States of America.

The question that presents itself, then, is this, “What does the Biden Administration think they are doing by ordering proportional responses against the Houthi terrorists who are attacking our naval vessels?”  If the Houthis, or their Iranian bosses, attack our sailors on our ships, they should feel the full force of our military strength.  We can destroy the Houthis’ ability to strike, and sink the Iranian Navy, within days.

The cowardly way the Biden Administration is dancing around with Iran is disgusting.  Iranian proxies in Iraq and Syria are firing on American forces stationed there.  Those are the sons and daughters of our neighbors and friends.  In some cases, they are our own flesh and blood.  Enough!

The use of military force is always the last option.  In the case of the Houthis and Iran, it seems that other options have been tried ad nauseum … and failed.

Border? What Border?

If you own a radio or television, you have probably heard about the crisis at our border with Mexico.  Depending on which report you may have heard, anywhere from eight to eleven million people have entered the United States illegally, since President Biden took office.  The Democrats’ open border policies have created multiple problems, the details of which are also common knowledge.

The crisis adversely affects everyone it touches; with the exception of terrorists and criminal cartels.  It has become a major issue for the 2024 presidential election.  Until recently, President Biden has been unwilling to do anything meaningful to correct the underlying policies that have created the problem.  The Democrats in the US House of Representatives and Senate have steadfastly refused to return the control of our borders to the United States’ government.  In fact, President Biden and his fellow Democrats have impeded it.

It is an election year, and President Biden’s approval ratings are in the tank.  So, he has approached the Mexican government, requesting assistance with controlling the flood of illegal migrants from and through Mexico to the United States.  He met with Mexican President Lopez Obrador while they were attending a conference in November, and they spoke on the telephone in late December.  They met again at the border on January 6th.  He also sent a delegation to Mexico for negotiations.  No meaningful results have been forthcoming.

On the contrary, President Lopez Obrador announced at a press conference on January 5th that Mexico would not help us with border control unless we:

give Latin American and Caribbean countries $20 billion, suspend our blockade of Cuba, remove all sanctions against Venezuela, and grant resident alien status to about 10 million migrants who are currently living in the United States illegally. (paraphrased) [1]

Some commentators and legislators have taken exception to Lopez Obrador’s remarks.  They have pointed out that the Mexican government has no business trying to influence American foreign and domestic policy.

Well … yup. That is exactly what Mexico is doing.  However, please remember that we have done the same thing to Mexico, and we are doing it to other countries as we speak, (Ukraine and Israel for example).  It is sometimes called diplomacy; especially if we are the ones doing it.

We don’t like it when another country blackmails us – do we.  It might be a good thing for Americans to reflect on that.  It could be one reason why so many people around the world don’t like us.

That does not mean we have to take President Lopez Obrador’s remarks lying down. Of course, the Biden Administration will probably grant concessions to Mexico.  Caving in is what they do.  By contrast, Donald Trump wants to do a wholesale roundup of illegal migrants and deport them.  That may result in violence.  The logistics of it are daunting, considering the number of people in question.  Further, the courts have dictated that they are entitled to due process before deportation.  So, what are we to do?

The problem of illegal migration is due in part to a broken US immigration system. Therefore, each of us must resolve to engage in a campaign of phone calls, letter writing, and email urging our elected representatives to engage in a bipartisan effort to hammer out comprehensive immigration reform.

Lamp in a Corner is strongly in favor of legal immigration.  Nevertheless, immigration from failed states where active terrorism is taking place must be curtailed.  There should be no discrimination regarding race, religion, age, gender, or country of origin, provided that the immigrants are willing to honestly forsake their allegiance to any other country except the United States.

Before the Democrats’ open borders policies created the current crisis, it was possible to deal with illegal migration by increasing the size of the border patrol, building barriers, advanced surveillance technology, tough monitoring of border crossings, and the like.  Although we must not stop these efforts, things have gotten so bad that they are no longer adequate.  It is necessary now to temporarily close the border with Mexico.  Airports and seaports must be closed to the movement of persons to and from Mexico.  The closure must remain in effect until the Mexican government realizes that it is in Mexico’s best interest to assist us with bringing the illegal migration, trafficking in drugs and human beings, and infiltration by terrorists and criminal organizations to an end.

Closing the border will result in severe economic disruption.  Unfortunately, ordinary people like those who live in Mexico and commute to work in the US will suffer. American families will experience shortages of consumer goods resulting in higher prices.  To mitigate the economic consequences to American families and agribusiness, very limited exceptions may be made for trucks, airplanes, and ships carrying produce, raw materials, and finished goods, and so forth; provided each vehicle and vessel entering the US is inspected.

We must remove the incentives that encourage people to migrate to the US illegally.  The US Constitution must be amended to prevent children who are born in the US of foreign parents from natural born citizenship.  Only children born in the US of parents who are American citizens may be granted US citizenship.  The laws governing granting asylum must be repealed or rewritten to prevent abuse.

We must not provide a free public education to the children of illegal migrants.  Illegal migrants must not have access to health care unless they pay for it – including hospital treatment for the medically indigent.  They must be ineligible for any form of public assistance (welfare).  Businesses that knowingly employ illegal migrants must be closed down.  Landlords who knowingly rent dwellings to illegal migrants must have their property confiscated.  It must be illegal to sell real property to illegal migrants, and the real property must be confiscated.  States must be prohibited from issuing drivers’ licenses and identification cards to illegal migrants.

Foreigners must never be allowed to assume that they can enter the United States to conduct criminal activity without severe consequences.  It is impossible to talk about all the contingencies here.  However, a few suggestions include:

Any illegal migrant or legal resident alien convicted of committing a felony in the US must serve a lengthy prison sentence without possibility of parole before deportation.  The sentence should be doubled for a violent felony resulting in injury to a victim and life without parole if the victim dies.  Any person who is not a US citizen should be sentenced to life without parole if they import illegal drugs or sell them in the United States.  Participation in organized criminal activity by illegal migrants or legal resident aliens should be subject mandatory prison sentences without parole before deportation.  Conviction for illegal reentry into the US after deportation should receive a mandatory prison sentence without parole prior to deportation.

These measures may seem harsh and inhumane to some.  We take no pleasure in suggesting them.  It is important to realize that the humanitarian crisis at the border is also inhumane, and that the only way to end it is to take the actions necessary to discourage people from trying to enter the US illegally.  The border crisis is also eroding the rule of law, which is the glue that holds our society together.  Without it we will eventually see a breakdown of the social order – anarchy.

We are not proposing measures that are crimes against humanity.  We are proposing that the United States of America take the actions necessary to stop what is the equivalent of an invasion by a foreign army of 10 million.  Americans are the most generous people on earth.  We openhandedly share with those less fortunate.  There are some who want to take advantage of our kindness.

When compared with much of the rest of the world, Americans have a high standard of living.  We who have earned a high standard of living by the hard work of our own hands, and those who have it by accident of birth, must learn a hard truth.  If you do not have the will to defend what you have, it will be taken away from you by others.  We are asking you to decide to survive … before it is too late.

God Has Your Back

Be Still My Soul

By Katherina von Schlegel
Jane Borthwick, Translator
Melody, Finlandia, by Jean Sibelius

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
in every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul; when dearest friends depart,
and all is darkened in the veil of tears,
then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay
from His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul; the hour is hast'ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last. *

The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.

Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

The Courts Cannot Cherry Pick the Constitution

It has been three years since the demonstration and riot in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021.  The details of that event are commonly known and will not be restated here.  It was a national tragedy, the sorted details of which the American people are not being allowed to forget.

Estimates vary. The total number of demonstrators was thought to be as few as “several thousand.”  The protest organizers expected as many as 30,000.  Some law enforcement sources thought there were as many as 80,000.  The Associated press estimated 10,000. [1]  No one knows for sure, but I have seen estimates of the number of rioters who entered the Capitol Building that go as high as 2,000. [2]

Deliberations about the Former President's alleged culpability in the matter continue to drag on and on in the courts.  The rhetoric of the 2024 presidential campaigns is rife with it as the candidates attempt to create a political advantage by pointing the finger of blame.  The Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine Secretary of State have ordered President Trump’s name to be removed from the Republican primary ballot.

The Colorado Supreme Court has found that President Trump is ineligible to hold office according to the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution because his actions on January 6th met the definition of insurrection, at a time when he was an office holder sworn to uphold the constitution.  The U.S. Supreme Court is in the process of rendering a decision, and that should (but probably won’t) put this thing to bed – one way or another.  Of course, the broadcast and print news media are having a feeding frenzy.

Please stay with me while I share a few thoughts with you about Donald Trump’s current eligibility to hold office.

The 14th Amendment, Sections 2 and 3 read:

2: Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.

3: No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

The legal definition of insurrection is:

18 U.S. Code § 2383 - Rebellion or Insurrection

Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States. [3]

The crime of sedition does not appear to have been alleged, but it is often mentioned in connection with insurrection, and a definition by one source is provided:

Generally, sedition is conduct or speech that incites individuals to violently rebel against the authority of the government. Insurrection includes the actual acts of violence and rebellion. [4]

After a reasonable effort, I was able to find that President Trump has been indited in Federal Court in Washington, D.C. on four felony counts: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. [5]  He faces 13 counts of election interference in Georgia. [6]

The presumption of innocence is not guaranteed by the constitution, but it is the law in several states.  The U.S. Supreme Court found the presumption of innocence to be necessary for a fair trial in the case of Taylor v. Kentucky.  The accused are not required to prove their innocence.  It is the job of the prosecution to prove the defendant guilty – beyond a reasonable doubt. [7]

No report was found that Donald Trump has been indited, tried, or convicted for insurrection or sedition.  Former President Trump is an American citizen.  The 5th and 14th Amendments guarantee him the right to  due process of law.  In my opinion, it is therefore unconstitutional and against case law for the Colorado Supreme court to remove his name from the Republican primary ballot for behavior that meets the definition of insurrection.

The Colorado Supreme Court cannot cherry pick the rights of American Citizens.  The 14th Amendment guarantees us the right to equal treatment under the law.  Common criminals are afforded the presumption of innocence every day.  Isn’t a former president entitled to the same rights as a common criminal?  His legal rights cannot be taken away from President Trump simply because the Colorado Court doesn’t like him or agree with his political views.

Make no mistake.  Trump’s behavior after the 2020 election was intemperate, reckless, and willful.  I am not trying to excuse him from the responsibility for his actions.  All I am trying to do is to speak out against an obvious abuse of all our rights under the U.S. Constitution.

Speaking of which, American citizens have the right to vote for the candidate of our choice.  The Colorado Supreme Court even went so far as to prohibit write-in votes for Trump to be counted.  Monkey-see-monkey-do.  It appears that Maine is only the first of several other states that will try to keep Mr. Trump off their ballots.

This is not North Korea.  It is America.  Barring reasonable limits keeping convicted felons from holding office, the government has no right to tell us who we can vote for.

Gotcha

The United States of America is faced with a number of serious challenges; including wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, inflation, an obscene national debt, serious balance of trade deficits, opposition from China and the Russian Federation, a nuclear North Korea, the possibility of a nuclear Iran, porous  borders with Canada and Mexico, violent crime, infiltration by drug cartels and terrorist organizations, deaths from fentanyl overdose, and many others.  Many of these challenges threaten our national security and the peace and safety of our people.

American voters need to be informed concerning where the presidential primary candidates stand on these important issues, and what they intend to do about them if elected.  That is why I am offended when candidates are asked to answer “gotcha” questions.  Serious discussion is needed in which candidates are given the opportunity to explain their views in detail.

A gotcha question is a trick question that is designed to cause someone to offer an answer they can - and will - be criticized for.  They are a verbal ambush.  Often there is no good answer available that will not generate controversy and cause the person being questioned to lose credibility.  In fact, the motivation for asking the question is to harm the one who is being asked to respond.

During the 2008 presidential election, Katie Couric had a series of interviews with then Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.  During one of these she asked Gov. Palin about her reading habits – what publications she had recently read.  Ms. Couric was obviously informed in advance that candidate Palin was not well read.  The question temporarily left the flummoxed candidate fumbling for an answer.  The object was clearly to give the audience the impression that Gov. Palin’s views were ill-informed or even ignorant.

Ms. Couric has spent her entire working life as a journalist.  To my knowledge she has no training or experience in management, supervision, or public administration.  Perhaps that is why she didn’t understand that the Vice Presidency is not a game of Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit.  True, the Vice President must be well informed, but their most reliable information will not come from the print and broadcast news media.

Katie Couric got accolades from the liberal media for the series of interviews, including the Walter Cronkite Award for Journalism Excellence. What she actually did was to stop Palin’s rising popularity in its tracks and cast question on John McCain’s judgement. McCain’s senior campaign strategist, Steve Schmidt, said, “… it was the most consequential interview from a negative perspective that a candidate for national office has gone through.[1] Immagine that.  Katie got an award for making a good candidate look bad.

Recently, Republican primary candidate Nikki Haley was asked about the reason for the Civil War by a man in a New Hampshire town hall meeting.  Her response included comments about government and individual freedom.  The man took issue with her for not mentioning slavery in her answer. * (It is not clear whether the man was a reporter.)  She later tried to clarify her views by stating that “Of course the Civil War was about slavery.” [2]

The press has jumped on the opportunity to speculate that this could be the end of her candidacy.  We have probably not heard the last of it.

It is not my purpose here to debate whether the Civil War was about slavery, or not.  The point is that no matter how Nikki Haley answered the question, it would provoke controversy, and the press has taken full advantage of it.

Nikki Haley was the Governor of South Carolina, which is a very conservative Southern state that was part of the Confederacy.  She served as Ambassador to the United Nations during the Trump Administration, and President Trump has often been characterized, unfairly, as a racist by the liberal establishment.  Thus, it is easy to deceitfully portray her as being on the wrong side of the race issue.

I am not diminishing the importance of race relations.  We need to know a candidate’s stance.  That is why it should not be the subject of shallow discussion prompted by trick questions that can be misconstrued by a biased media in 30 second sound bites.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, it appears that, (due to his popularity among Republican voters), Donald Trump will be their candidate for President of the United States.  Nikki Haley would make a good candidate for Vice President.  She polls well against Joe Biden, which could help Trump win.  Since she resigned as his UN Ambassador, however, Donald Trump may be reluctant to have her as his running mate.  Nonetheless, her run for the Republican presidential nomination now may serve as a foot in the door for 2028.  Who knows?  The point here is she should not be removed from consideration over a gotcha question.

Have a Happy New Year!  May it be safe and prosperous.  Please don’t drink and drive.

Christ is Born

      In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.  This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.  And all went to be registered, each to his own town.  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,  to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.  And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.  And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

     And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.  And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

     When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”  And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.  And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.  And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.  But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.  And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

     And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.  (Luke 2:1-21 ESV) *

All the Fullness of God in a Man

Angels announced the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem to shepherds tending their flocks, and a star guided the Magi “from the East” to worship the newborn King of the Jews.  The beautiful accounts as provided to us by the Gospels of Matthew and Luke are well known.  Other passages in the Holy Bible expound upon the significance of this holy event:

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11 NIV)

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.  For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.  But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. (Colossians 1:15-23 NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  (John 1:1-14 NIV) *
