A Broken and Contrite Heart (Psalm 51:17)

One source ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Me_(Kris_Kristofferson_song ) tells us that Kris Kristofferson wrote “Why Me” (a.k.a. “Why Me Lord”) when he was at an emotionally low place in his life; after attending a church service where he was influenced by the music of Larry Gatlin and a sermon by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow.  It is the cry of a man who has reached the end of his own strength and come to realize his need for The Savior.

Lamp in a Corner cannot hold Mr. Kristofferson up as an example for Christian living.  Good or bad, what he has done with the gift of salvation is between him and the Lord.  However, the words of this song touch my heart … because I have been there.  I know what it is to be completely broken before the Lord.  All I can do is to praise Jesus for bringing me to the point where I know that without Him I am nothing. (John 15:1-8)

Why Me
By
Kris Kristofferson

Why me Lord what have I ever done
To deserve even one of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me, Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth lovin’ you or the kindness you’ve shown

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me, Jesus, my soul’s in your hand

Try me, Lord, if you think there’s a way
I can try to repay all I’ve taken from you
Maybe Lord I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself, on my way back to you

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me, Jesus, my soul’s in your hand

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me Jesus my souls in your hand
Jesus, my soul’s in your hand.

To know Jesus is to know peace.  Not to know Jesus is to know no peace.
