According to some opinion polls a majority of American voters believe the country is headed in the wrong direction. On 21 August 2022, Julia Mueller reported in The Hill website that:
“Nearly three-quarters of voters in a new poll said they believed things in the U.S. were headed in the wrong direction. An NBC News poll revealed just 21 percent of voters feel the nation is headed in the right direction, while 74 percent think the opposite.”[1]
However, the polls also indicate that there is a fairly even split between voters who intend to vote for Democratic or Republican candidates. On the CNN website, 13 October 2022, Jennifer Agista wrote:
“Despite more than two-thirds of Americans saying the country is going in the wrong direction, Democrats have surged into the lead on the generic congressional ballot and President Biden’s approval rating has ticked upward as the party makes gains among independent voters and women following the overturn of Roe v. Wade, a new poll released on Thursday indicates.
The Wall Street Journal survey shows that 47% of registered voters would support a Democratic candidate for Congress if the midterm elections were held today. Another 44% said they would support the Republican candidate, while the remaining 9% said they were unsure of their choice or refused to answer.
The same poll showed Republicans with 46%
support among registered voters in March, while Democrats had 41% support and
13% of voters said they were unsure.
Among likely voters nationwide, the race is a tight split, with 50% backing the Democratic candidate and 47% behind the Republican. But in competitive congressional districts, Democratic support among likely voters dips and preferences tilt toward the Republicans: 48% of likely voters in that group prefer the Republican candidate, 43% the Democrat.”[2]
It was reported on Fox News last night that there has been a shift toward favoring Republican candidates among White, suburban women – a demographic that voted for President Biden in the last national election. The pundits believed that this shift might tip the scales in favor of Republican candidates.
With a large number of voters still undecided,
the results of the election seem to be impossible for the average person to
predict. Some commentators point to
voter disapproval of President Biden’s performance in office as a possible
predictor of a big Republican victory.
Our recent past has shown us that the results of close elections are prone to dispute. The Democrats thought Al Gore defeated George W. Bush, and accused the Republicans and the courts of colluding to deny Vice President Gore the victory. More recently, Donald Trump and others disputed the results of the last Presidential Election, accusing the Democrats of manipulating the vote. The only way we can be sure that the results of multiple close elections across the United States are not disputed after the upcoming Midterms is for the results to be decisive in favor of one candidate or the other. Disputed elections are divisive and harmful to the country.
It will not be enough for the Republicans to win a one or two seat majority in the US Senate and House of Representatives. In order to be able to accomplish anything after taking office, they will need enough votes to pass legislation over President Biden’s veto. This calls for everyone who wants a U-turn in the direction our government is taking us to get out and vote. We need a “veto proof” majority to begin to correct the damage the Democrats have done, since 20 January 2021.
If the Republicans win any kind of majority in the House and Senate, they must learn to set aside their disagreements and work together. Too many times in the past, the voters have given the Republicans a victory only to see them squander it. If they blow it again they will torpedo any chance for a Republican to be elected president in 2024.
I was not able to find out who said it first,
but there is a saying that goes, “The man who falls over the same rock twice,
deserves to break his neck.” After the
debacle the Democrats have created since 20 January 2021, I just cannot
understand why anyone would vote for a Democrat, regardless of their political
leanings. Let us all hope and pray that
our fellow citizens will not fall over that rock again.
Anyone who has taken a recent road trip that involved traveling on our Interstate highways can attest to their state of disrepair and need for expansion to accommodate increased traffic. A large number of our bridges are in such bad condition that they are dangerous. I had the misfortune to change planes at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport two years ago. I won’t do that again. In many places, our electrical grid is a jury-rigged patchwork that cannot meet the existing demand for electric power, let alone the additional demand that will come from charging electric cars.
In short, we can agree that our infrastructure needs repair, rebuilding, and maintenance. The problem is that we don’t have the money to pay for it without inflationary spending and creating debt.
When he was in office President Donald Trump attempted to convince Congress to provide $200 Billion to improve our infrastructure. The intent was to stimulate up to $1.5 Trillion in combined spending to include money provided by state, local, tribal, and private sectors. He wanted to reduce regulatory barriers and streamline permitting, thus reducing the cost of infrastructure improvement – especially in rural areas. Trump’s plan intended to provide grants in aid to train the skilled labor force needed for infrastructure improvement.[1] I understood President Trump’s public statements to mean that his focus was on projects that would maintain, repair, expand and modernize physical infrastructure like airports, roads, bridges, and railways. The idea I got from his statements was that infrastructure improvement would stimulate growth in the domestic economy.
Following their win in the 2020 election, the Democrats used infrastructure improvement as a foil promote spending trillions of dollars under the umbrella of infrastructure – some of which was unrelated to physical infrastructure. Following a compromise with Republicans, a pared down version of H.R.3684 – Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act became Public Law 117-58 on 15 November 2021. According to a statement on the Internet from the White House (Biden Administration) [2] the new law includes provisions for:
The estimated long-term cost of Public Law 117-58 (Bipartisan Infrastructure Law), as amended, is $1.2 Trillion. [3]
In fairness, neither of these summaries of proposed infrastructure improvements is all-inclusive. That said, there are some observations I would like voters to consider when choosing candidates to vote for on November 8th.
The bill for either program of infrastructure improvement listed above is over a trillion dollars. President Trump’s plan differs in that it proposes passing down the lion’s share of the spending to the state and local level. The resultant inflation from either plan will be more harmful to the country than our dilapidated infrastructure. Unless the government can come up with a realistic and workable way to pay for infrastructure improvement in cash, as the expenses occur, we must not go forward with it.
Better minds than mine are available to devise such methods of payment. What comes to my mind are user paid fees and taxes. “Paying as you go” would slow down the rate of infrastructure improvement, but it would also ease the impact of its accompanying inflationary spending.
Therefore, the government must scrap both plans and start over. Public Law 117-58 should be repealed. Programs, spending, and revenue sources for infrastructure improvement extant before Public Law 117-58 should be taken into consideration in determining what more is needed. Additional programs should be limited to physical infrastructure projects that are necessary for public safety and to support the return of manufacturing to the United States – creating jobs.
The biggest infrastructure concern we have, in my opinion, is “hardening” the electric grid, military weaponry and vehicles, and all computer-related technology against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) damage, which may come from an enemy attack or from natural phenomena like solar activity. Presently, an EMP event could result in disabling air, sea, and ground transportation. Our people would soon run out of food, water, and medicine. Trash and garbage would pile up in the streets. Sewer systems would stop working. We would lose most of our communication systems. (No smart-phones kids.) There would be no electric power. The multiplied effects would pit over 300 million people against each other in competition to get their basic survival needs met. Millions could die in the chaos. The result would be a complete breakdown of the social order.
Reducing the risks associated with an EMP event is the only infrastructure-related problem that directly and immediately affects our ability to survive as an organized society. It is, therefore, the only infrastructure problem that justifies deficit spending – right now!
Their heads buried in the sand, our elected
representatives have virtually ignored the risk of an EMP event in their
planning for infrastructure improvement.

In an email to his constituents on September 14, 2022, Idaho Senator Jim Risch, a Republican, pointed out that over 3 million people have been apprehended entering the United States illegally since President Biden took office. He also said that number of illegal entries is greater than the population of the city of Chicago and that it is more than the entire population of the State of Idaho.
The 2020 census found that the population of Chicago was 2,746,388. It ranks third in population size among American cities after New York City and Los Angeles.[1] Idaho has about 1.8 million inhabitants, and it is our seventh least in population density among US states.[2]
Too many people are entering the country illegally, and the principle of “rule of law” demands action. Although President Trump was able to reduce illegal entry significantly, the problem was still there when President Biden took office. It has been a problem for decades. It is an undeniable fact, however, that the problem of illegal migration into the US has gotten exponentially worse, during the Biden Administration.
There are some issues on which the American public is fairly evenly divided, and about which each side is entrenched. Abortion, Gun Control, and Immigration, to name a few, are among those issues. It makes it difficult for politicians to deal with them because no matter what they do it will make about half the people angry. For example, one attempt to legislate immigration reform was the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act sponsored by Sen. John McCain in 2005. The public outcry against it was so great that the bill failed to pass, and John McCain’s political standing among Conservatives was severely damaged. Since the political risks are so great, politicians tend to avoid attempts to resolve this kind of problem.
Immigration is a very controversial subject that is laden with emotion. We need, however, to deal with the issue effectively with an eye to the long-term impact on the future of our country, and especially on how it will affect the lives of our children and their children. Therefore, as a nation, let’s set aside the blaming and name-calling that is going on now.
The problems created by illegal migration have been discussed in the halls of government, in the media, on the Internet, and between private individuals at great length. It is self-evident that illegal entry has adversely affected our educational system, health care system, social welfare system, housing availability, controlled substance abuse, crime, disease control, our job market, national security, and more. Our failure to reform our immigration laws and policies into something that is effective, coherent, fair, and just is a disgrace to our government and a disservice to our people.
When possible, I try to suggest solutions to the problems that I identify in Lamp in a Corner. To that end, I urge people to vote for candidates who will work toward doing the following:
Article 5 of the United States’ Constitution provides processes for amending it. Amendment 14 grants US citizenship to any person who is born in the United States. As with amnesty and granting asylum, some foreigners are abusing the kindness of the American people by coming to the United States to deliver their infants within our borders – making them eligible for citizenship. The simplest method for amending the constitution is for the process to be initiated by Congress. Please vote for candidates who will act to amend the constitution to provide that US citizenship for children who are born in the United States, be granted only to the children of US citizens. The amendment should provide citizenship for children of US citizens born while they are serving overseas in the military or diplomatic corps.
It is imperative that Congress revise our laws governing immigration, and those laws must compel their enforcement by the Executive Branch on pain of impeachment. If necessary, these laws should be passed over President Biden’s veto. They should provide a workable and efficient immigration process that gives priority to persons with skills that are needed in our economy, but the less fortunate must also have an opportunity to immigrate. Provision, including sufficient funding, must be made for screening out terrorists and other criminals. Persons seeking naturalization should be required to submit to random drug testing for enough time to detect the abuse of controlled substances. Potential citizens must be required to learn to speak, read, and write English, and they must make a commitment to transfer their loyalty from their country of origin to the United States. It is clear that needed changes to our immigration laws will not happen without a majority of legislators in both houses of Congress who are determined to get it done. Please vote accordingly on November 8th.
There are too many people living in the United States illegally to “round up and deport.” On the Center for Immigration Studies website on March 29, 2022, Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler reported, “We estimate that in January 2022 there were 11.35 million illegal immigrants in the country — a 1.13 million increase over the 10.22 million in January 2021. Our preliminary estimate for February of this year is 11.46 million.”[3]
Amnesty is not an option that is acceptable to a large proportion of the American public. Congress must create a comprehensive strategy for motivating illegal migrants to leave the United States on their own. It must focus on removing the incentives that brought them here in the first place and cause them to remain. Humanitarian assistance must be provided to help them leave, and they should have the opportunity to immigrate legally after they return to their native countries.
We must stop illegal migration at the border with Mexico, our seaports, and our airports. The methods used must be those proven to be effective in the real world – not in somebody’s talking points. Technology, a wall, and the National Guard will not work separately. We must implement all measures that have been proven to be effective in a combined effort – a “full court press.” We need to stop people from crossing the border before it requires due process to send them back.
We need the help of the Mexican government and other governments to stop illegal migration into the United States, and we must do whatever it takes to get their assistance. If we must temporarily shut down the border with Mexico completely to convince them to do their part, then so be it. To paraphrase President Trump, ‘Mexico needs us more than we need Mexico.’ This is not intended to be arrogant, but the crisis on the border with Mexico demands that we play “hardball.” Further, it is in Mexico’s best interest to put an end to the huge revenues the Cartels are getting from illegal migration and drug smuggling.
Liberals want unrestricted immigration to increase their voter base. Conservatives want to import cheap labor. The result of this self-indulgence has been terrible suffering on the part of many illegal migrants, and it is damaging to our own people and society. Let’s put a stop to it by voting for candidates who really will work for sanity in the ways the United States manages immigration.

The latest voter opinion polls vary considerably about which issues American voters find to be most important. The most recent poll I read was a Fox News poll of registered voters taken October 9-12, 2022. It showed (in order of importance) that voters found:
to be most important to them.
Other polls listed the Economy, Immigration, Climate Change, Guns, Voting Policies, Energy, Race Relations, and Foreign Policy (among others) as their most important issues for 2022.[2]
National Defense was notably absent from any of the lists I found. It would be interesting to know why? Were respondents offered the opportunity choose National Defense as an issue of importance to them? If not, then why not? Was it an error of omission by the pollsters, or did they exclude National Defense on purpose? If it was excluded on purpose, then why?
I believe that National Defense is an issue that is vital to the continued existence of the United States of America as we know it. Let me explain why I think voters must vote for candidates who favor a strong National Defense. Hopefully, I can raise the consciousness of a few of my fellow citizens on this issue before November 8th.
At times, an issue may be understood when studied by itself, or by considering it and two or three variables that influence outcomes. Often, issues are part of a dynamic in which many things are interrelated. Our ability to defend our country is impacted by many of the other issues voters say they are concerned with in the upcoming elections in 2022 and (hopefully) in 2024.
Voters are concerned about the Economy. Our GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has posted negative growth for the previous two quarters of 2022. Traditionally, a recession is defined by two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. There is some disagreement among the experts about whether we are in a recession, but it is clear that the U.S. economy is not performing well. Our government’s primary source of revenue comes from taxing economic activity. When the government spends more money than it takes in, the result is called deficit spending. Accumulated deficits become the national debt. Our current national debt is $31,148,224,201,748. (31 trillion dollars) Opinion varies as to how much debt we can accumulate before we are forced to default. It seems clear to me that, without large annual revenue surpluses, we will not be able to reduce the national debt significantly, let alone pay it off. To compound the severity of the problem, the government has embarked on programs that will increase federal spending by trillions of dollars. The result has been another issue of concern to voters in 2022 – Runaway Inflation.
The Biden Administration has shut down American energy production. The result has been higher fuel and utility prices, which are contributing to inflation. President Biden has attempted to lower fuel prices by increasing the supply of oil. He has asked oil producing countries to increase their oil production, and he has released oil from our strategic reserves. The result has been a small, temporary reduction of the price of refined petroleum products. However, these actions have damaged our ability to defend ourselves. Other nations have lost confidence in our competence to govern ourselves and to lead the free world. Further, if we have to go to war without strategic oil reserves, what will we use to fuel our ships, airplanes, and tanks – fumes?
Despite some improvement during the Trump Administration, too much of our productive capacity remains overseas. Many things like computers, shoes, batteries for our electronic vehicles, and pharmaceuticals are made in China. In an ill-considered statement during an interview recently, President Biden said that he would use American military personnel to defend Taiwan if the Chinese invaded. Now, help me understand because I’m getting a little older myself. How, pray tell, are we going to fight China if we are getting the things we need to support our troops and our home front from them?
The history of modern warfare shows us that, in most cases, the nation with the most resources, money, and productive capacity is the nation that will prevail in a shooting war. See how it all works together to make us or break us? Our present government is flushing our economic power and the value of our money down the toilet. In short, the United States cannot afford to fight a big war for any length of time, and our adversaries know it.
It has been obvious for a long time that the Democrats want to keep themselves in power by providing social programs that will make large groups of Americans dependent on the government for one or more of them. Military spending takes away from the government’s ability to fund more and bigger social programs. Consequently, whenever they are in control in Washington, D.C. the Democrats limit military spending. In the Clinton and Obama Administrations, the cuts were drastic. Acting on ideology, rather than on pragmatism, President Obama also unilaterally reduced our nuclear capabilities in the futile hope our adversaries would follow suit. It didn’t happen. They know that in international relations it is important to deal with other nations from a position of strength. So, if International Relations is an important issue to voters in 2022, we must understand that International Relations do not exist in a vacuum.
When military appropriations remain static, or are reduced, one of the areas that is affected is weapons development, production, and distribution. Since World War II, the United States has faced adversaries with numerically superior forces. The only way that we have been able to hold the strategic advantage is through superior weaponry and the nuclear deterrent. Presently, we can see how the effectiveness of American and NATO weapons has helped the Ukrainians in their struggle with Russia. We have, however, lost much of the lead we had in weapons development, and we must elect leaders who understand the importance of getting it back.
The issue of Education is related to the National Defense. As weapons systems become more sophisticated, our war fighters need to have strong educational backgrounds in Science, Mathematics, Geography, Engineering, and Computer Science to operate them and assist in their development and improvement.
Much as I hate to advocate for increased spending, I believe it is imperative for the United States to have enough military power to simultaneously defend our interests and our allies on three fronts … Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. To help offset increased military spending, it is important to cut spending on social programs and remove the need for them by bringing our industrial production back home. People with high paying jobs do not need social programs.
China has built a powerful navy, tested weapons in outer space, has a first-rate air force, and has nearly achieved parity with the United States in military strength. Despite their poor showing in Ukraine, Russia remains a formidable military power, with land based hypersonic missile systems that can evade anti-missile defenses and are capable of delivering nuclear warheads. There are reports that the Russians will soon deploy hypersonic missiles on some of their surface vessels and on submarines. North Korea has nuclear weapons and large conventional forces. They continue to develop more sophisticated delivery systems for their nuclear weapons. Iran will become a nuclear power in the foreseeable future. They have missiles capable of striking targets in the Middle East and Europe.
The Chinese, Russians, Iranians, and North Koreans are forming mutually supporting diplomatic and economic relationships. They are not blind. They know that the United States cannot fight all of them at once. It is entirely possible that they might agree to act simultaneously to achieve their various ambitions by using military force. What would happen if China invaded Taiwan, North Korea invaded South Korea, Russia attacked Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, and Poland, and Iran and other Middle Eastern countries attacked Israel – all at the same time?

we do not need to panic or start digging holes in our backyards. We do need to elect leaders in 2022 and 2024 who
have some sense of the real problems we face that may mean the difference
between the survival of our society as we know it, or living with an oppressor’s
boot on our necks. No joke. Vote the Democrats and RINO Republicans out
of office – now.
