Having a bad day?

No matter what has happened to bring you down, do not despair.  God has your back.  Believe in Him.  Trust in Him.  He will get you through it.  Listen to the Holy Spirit as He moved the Apostle Paul to write in Romans 8:26-39 (NASB):

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;

30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

33 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies;

34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 Just as it is written, "For your sake we are being put to death all day; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” (Psalm 44:22)

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.

38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, not things to come, nor powers

39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.*

"Middle Class Joe"

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has begun billing himself as “Middle Class Joe.”  As usual, the facts do not support what the Democrats say.

The “Celebrity Net Worth” website reports presidential candidate Joe Biden’s net worth to be about $9 million.(1)  Some observers think that may be a conservative estimate. (2)  Be that as it may, the median household income in the Unites States was estimated to be $61,372, in 2017.(3)  Joe Biden’s household income for 2017 was $11 million.(4)

Note:  Median income is the amount which divides the income distribution into two equal groups, half having income above that amount, and half having income below that amount. Mean income (average) is the amount obtained by dividing the total aggregate income of a group by the number of units in that group…

— US Census Bureau, Frequently Asked Question, published by First Gov.(5)

Joe Biden is a career politician who has enriched himself through public service.  He is the embodiment of what so many people voted against in 2016.  He has again shown himself to be out of touch with real Americans and the economic challenges they face every day.

America experienced stagnant wages, and the country lost jobs to foreign competitors, during the Obama years.  “Middle Class Joe” is offering our people nothing but a continuing saga of the same lies and economic hardships.  “Lamp in a Corner” calls on the former Vice President to withdraw from the 2020 presidential race immediately for the good of the country.

The Word in Philippians

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul wrote the Epistle to the Philippians, while he was being held prisoner; most likely in Rome.  He had received a gift of support from the believers in Philippi, and he wanted to thank them.  However, in spite of his circumstances, he filled the letter with joy, hope and encouragement as well, and we, also, can benefit from it. (from NASB*)

Chapter 1

Verse 6:  For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Verse 21:  For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Verses 27-30:  Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents - which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake …

Chapter 2

Verses 9-11:  … God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Verse 13:  … for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

Chapter 3

Verse 8:  More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ …

Verses 20-21:   For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.

Chapter 4:

Verses 4-8:  Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,  will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Verse 13:  I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Verse 19:  And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Dear reader, we are saved by the grace of God through faith.  This is a gift of God, not something we can earn by doing good deeds. (Ephesians 2:8-9)  We find this gift of trusting in God’s grace by faith through reading God’s Word. (Romans 10:17)

Pray for those living in places like North Korea, who are denied the Bible, and where possessing a Bible can result in imprisonment, torture, and sometimes execution.  Please support ministries like Voice of the Martyrs that smuggle Bibles into countries where they are forbidden.

Please read God’s Word.  He will richly bless you for it.

I Love a Parade

President Trump has chosen to give the military a larger role in the Independence Day parade tomorrow in Washington, D.C.  Predictably, he is being criticized for it by Liberals in the press and the Democratic Party.

Please allow me to point out that without the sacrifices of our service men and women we would not have an opportunity to celebrate our freedom tomorrow.  The numbers vary a bit by source, but I think it is reasonably accurate to say that the United States of America has sustained over 650,000 combat deaths, and almost 1,500,000 wounded, since the Revolutionary War.*  Therefore, I think our armed forces have earned a place of honor in the parade.

I am thankful that more resources are now being provided to ensure that our military is the best equipped and trained fighting force possible.  I do not object to the display of our weapons in the parade.  Every American should be given the confidence to have a reasonable sense of satisfaction with our state of readiness.

It makes me sick to see the lack of respect and the ingratitude being displayed by the Left over this matter.  As a Viet Nam Era veteran, I think a little recognition is due to our fallen, to our wounded, to all veterans, and especially to their families.

A Broken and Contrite Heart (Psalm 51:17)

One source ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Me_(Kris_Kristofferson_song ) tells us that Kris Kristofferson wrote “Why Me” (a.k.a. “Why Me Lord”) when he was at an emotionally low place in his life; after attending a church service where he was influenced by the music of Larry Gatlin and a sermon by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow.  It is the cry of a man who has reached the end of his own strength and come to realize his need for The Savior.

Lamp in a Corner cannot hold Mr. Kristofferson up as an example for Christian living.  Good or bad, what he has done with the gift of salvation is between him and the Lord.  However, the words of this song touch my heart … because I have been there.  I know what it is to be completely broken before the Lord.  All I can do is to praise Jesus for bringing me to the point where I know that without Him I am nothing. (John 15:1-8)

Why Me
By
Kris Kristofferson

Why me Lord what have I ever done
To deserve even one of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me, Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth lovin’ you or the kindness you’ve shown

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me, Jesus, my soul’s in your hand

Try me, Lord, if you think there’s a way
I can try to repay all I’ve taken from you
Maybe Lord I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself, on my way back to you

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me, Jesus, my soul’s in your hand

Lord help me, Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
But now that I know that I’ve needed you so
Help me Jesus my souls in your hand
Jesus, my soul’s in your hand.

To know Jesus is to know peace.  Not to know Jesus is to know no peace.

Think it Through

Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States have been a leading news story for the last few weeks.  Worried commentators describe the situation as “dangerous.” Vladimir Putin has warned that a war with Iran could have “catastrophic” consequences for the Middle East.

The struggle between the United States and Iran has been going on since the Shah was driven out by Islamic fundamentalists during the Carter Administration.  It is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.  Rather than trying to solve it in a few short paragraphs, I would like to suggest a way for ordinary Americans to look at problems like this; and then allow you to draw your own conclusions.

The United States has determined that Iran has not acted in good faith regarding the Iran Nuclear Agreement negotiated by the Obama Administration.  President Trump has withdrawn the U.S. from the agreement, and has imposed economic sanctions the stated goal of which is to force Iran to renegotiate the terms of the agreement.  Iran has interfered with shipping in the area of the Gulf of Oman.  Consequently, the U.S. has increased its military presence in the area.  Iran shot down an unmanned American drone.  President Trump ordered a military strike on Iran in retaliation but called it back at the last minute.

Absent from most of the public discourse following President Trump’s decision has been what I call an “if - then” analysis.  Consequently, the scrutiny has been shallow and full of finger-pointing.  The solutions offered have been short-term fixes that do not get to the root of the problem.

If the United States had conducted the military strike on Iran, then what would have been their response?  If the United States had retaliated to that response, then how would Iran have responded to that?  Und so weiter.

As a people, one of our major weaknesses is impatience.  We want immediate solutions, which keeps our focus on the short-term.  We must learn to look at the consequences of the consequences of the consequences of our actions.  We need to think through all possible outcomes, and plan for the long-term.

President George W. Bush believed that the struggle in the Middle East would last a generation.  We need to understand Iran in terms of what the Iranian government says it wants.  If we take what they say at face value, then they want:

1.    The total obliteration of Israel.

2.    The destruction of the United States in its present form.

3.    The establishment of an Islamic Caliphate with Iran as its leader; first in the Middle East, and then throughout the world.

Iran’s bid to become a nuclear power is just a part of a much larger gestalt.  President Obama’s solution was to accept a nuclear Iran as inevitable and to delay it as long as possible.  President Trump’s solution is to declare that the United States will never allow Iran to become a nuclear power, to mean it, and to apply as much economic and military pressure as is needed to prevent that from happening.

Regardless, we Americans can expect to be dealing with problems in the Middle East for years to come, whether we are sick of it or not.  We need serious, long-term goals with all the possible actions and reactions gamed out in advance.

Hal Lindsey teaches that the Antichrist will come to world prominence by brokering a peace deal in the Middle East.  However, even that deal will not last.  A coalition of Middle Eastern countries, led by Russia, will attack Israel. (Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39)  The battle will be so horrible that it can only be ended by the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Is the stage being set? Are you ready?  Accept Jesus as your savior today.  Make Him the Lord of your life.  Do it right now.

Abortion II

In the United states, the issue of abortion is often volatile and divisive.  Efforts to have intellectually honest and authentic conversations about when human life begins, contraception, and abortion often turn into shouting matches, and worse.  Then again, many people just don’t care; until they are affected personally.

Roman Catholics believe that God’s will is interfered with when any method of contraception is used.  Others believe that not planning pregnancy is socially irresponsible.  Most believe that abortion should not become a method of contraception.  Many Protestants think that God is sovereign, all-knowing, and all powerful.  They believe that if God wills someone to be born, they will be, and the use of contraception (not abortion) is permissible.  Personally, I believe that I will meet Jesus face to face, and I will understand all things then.  Until that time, I am to rely on the Holy Bible as my ultimate guide to faith and practice.

Many people, however, do not believe in God, and they oppose efforts to impose Bible based restrictions on them.  Others believe there is a God, but that He will just have to understand if they ignore Him when His rules become inconvenient.

My God says that we are not to commit murder. (Exodus 20:13) The U.S. Constitution says that no one may be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. (14th Amendment)  So, the debate often centers on when human life begins.

When a sperm cell unites with an egg inside a woman’s body, the resultant fertilization produces a zygote that has unique DNA.  That particular set of DNA never existed before, and will never again, except in the case of multiple births from a single egg.  Is this when human life begins?  Immediately, cells begin to divide within the zygote forming an embryo, which may become attached to the woman’s uterus.  After three months, the attached embryo is called a fetus.  Except in the case of a miscarriage, a live birth will result, if the pregnancy is not interfered with.  When along the way does a baby become a human being?

Pregnancy … sooner or later people are going to figure out what causes that.  Unless one or both partners are sterile, sexual intercourse between a man and a woman always involves the risk of pregnancy.  Except in cases like rape or child abuse, when people have sex it is because they choose or consent to do so.  Since some object to the interjection of religion into the conversation, let’s set it aside for a moment.  Ethical people accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions.  Are not those who choose to have sex bound to accept responsibility for the consequences?

People are human.  They make mistakes.  I did.  By the grace of God, I didn’t (to the best of my knowledge) father a child outside of marriage.  I was lucky, but if I had I would have taken responsibility to care for the child or seen that it was adopted, given the cooperation of the lady involved.  Yea me.  What about the woman who gets pregnant during an affair with a married man, or the young college student who will have to abandon a good future to raise a child?  What about the parents of a teenage daughter who gets pregnant with a guy who will surely ruin her life further if she marries him, or the welfare mom who already has more children than she can provide for?  Tough choices.

Since people sometimes do a bad job of dealing with tough choices, the community (government) acts to legislate responsible behavior.  Libertarians may say that is not an appropriate role for government.  I wish it were not necessary, however, the government is supposed to be an expression of the will of the people in America.  People here feel a corporate responsibility to protect human life.  We just can’t agree about how to do it.

Presently, most states allow late-term (third trimester) abortion under restrictive circumstances.  Alaska, Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. allow late-term abortion with little restriction.  New York and Virginia, have laws that allow open access to abortion, and have (or are in the process of providing for) abortion up to and including when a woman is in labor.  Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia is reported to have said that if a viable baby is born alive as a result of a late-term abortion, and the mother so chooses, it should be kept comfortable but allowed to die.  When he was a state legislator in Illinois, Barack Obama is reported to have voted “present” on a bill that provided what Gov. Northam is currently proposing.

A large number of other states have adopted very restrictive abortion laws.  Whether the laws are prochoice or prolife, they are already being challenged in court.  There are people who think some of the prolife laws are being passed with the intention of eventually challenging Roe v. Wade before the supreme court.

I will be 71 years old soon.  In my life I have found that heartache, misery, and shame follow when we don’t do what God tells us to.  It isn’t always easy, but it is better than the chaos caused by a sinful way of life.  One thing we can learn from the nasty fight we have been having in America over abortion is that, when the blind lead the blind they all fall into a pit. (Matthew 15:14)  God gave us sex and children for our happiness.  I urge that we handle sex and procreation the way God has told us to.

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you,
then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve …
But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
(Joshua 24:15 NIV)
